SPIN Selling
A four-stage question sequence that leads a buyer to state the value of solving their problem themselves.
SPIN is a question sequence, Situation, Problem, Implication, Need-payoff, that walks a buyer from their current state to naming the value of change in their own words. Neil Rackham set it out in SPIN Selling (1988), based on Huthwaite’s study of thousands of real sales calls, which found top performers asked questions in roughly this order.
To use it, start with a few light Situation questions about how things work today, surface a Problem the buyer admits, then ask Implication questions that make the cost of that problem concrete (“what does that delay cost you a month?”). Finish with Need-payoff questions that get them to say the benefit out loud (“if that were fixed, what changes?”).
It was built for larger, considered purchases, where the buyer needs to talk themselves into the size of the problem. On a small, quick sale the full sequence is overkill and just slows the deal.
