Gatekeeper Call Script
What to actually say to an assistant or receptionist to get transferred instead of screened out.
How it sounds
- Buyer What's this regarding?
- You Answer honestly and specifically, not with a vague pitch line.
- Buyer (transfers you, or gives you real information instead of a brush-off)
- Result You reach the contact, or learn something useful for the next attempt
The script
You: Hi, this is {{YourName}} calling for {{ContactName}}, is
{{ContactName}} available?
Gatekeeper: What's this regarding?
You: Sure, it's about {{SpecificReason}}. {{ContactName}} and I
haven't spoken yet so I don't have a direct line, could you
connect me or let me know the best way to reach them?
If unavailable:
You: No problem, when's a better time to try? And is there
anything I should know before I call back? Replace the highlighted {{fields}} before you send it.
How to use it
The person answering the phone is not an obstacle, they are someone with real influence over whether your call gets through, and treating them that way changes how the call goes. This script skips the vague “just following up” line, which gatekeepers hear all day and route straight to voicemail, and instead answers “what’s this regarding?” honestly with something specific enough to sound like a real reason.
Say {{SpecificReason}} in one plain sentence, not a pitch; a gatekeeper deciding whether to interrupt their boss is not evaluating your offer, they are deciding whether this sounds legitimate and worth the interruption. If you don’t get through, the fallback question, when’s a better time and what should I know, treats the gatekeeper as a source of information rather than a wall, and often gets you more than the call itself would have.
There is no single originator for this approach; it is standard prospecting practice built on a simple shift: most reps treat the gatekeeper as friction to get past, and the ones who treat them as a person tend to get through more often.
